At Georgia’s Pro Day on Thursday the 19th of March, Knowshon Moreno and other Bulldog standouts got to show their stuff to NFL scouts and the media.

Moreno did not have a strong performance running the 40 yard dash at times of 4.6 and 4.63. This should not scare off any NFL scouts. In Knowshon’s defense, he has been sick for the past week and weighed in seven pounds under the 217 lbs that he weighed at the NFL combine. He did however slightly improve his time from the combine where he was clocked at 4.62 and 4.68. Aside from the 40 yard dash, Moreno was impressive in the other drills just as he was at the combine.

40 yard dash time does not say it all; many good NFL running backs were never that fast. Emmitt Smith for example was far from the fastest running back and he had a pretty impressive career.

Andre Smith On Damage Control

Andre Smith went from being considered the top draft prospect in the 2009 NFL Draft to being a second round prospect in one day at the NFL combine. Smith came to the combine out of shape and left before the offensive lineman were scheduled to participate in drills.

This decision had the NFL scouts second guessing Smith’s heart. He was quoted saying, “I just made a bad decision in leaving the combine, if I had it to do all over again. I would handle it differently. I just made a bad decision in leaving, but I think I made a great football decision to get back and start working out with my trainer.”

The damage control happened at the Crimson Tide’s prod day on Wednesday. Smith did the drills he missed at the combine. Andre came in leaner at 6 foot 4 inches, 325 pounds. He was clocked in the 40 at 5.28 and 5.33. He had a 25 inch vertical leap and bench pressed 225 pounds 19 times.

To get back in shape, Smith has been working out in Atlanta doing two hour sessions with Olympic gold medalist Chryste Gaines three days a week and working on footwork and football skills with former NFL tackle Tony Jones.

The decision to leave the combine really hurt Smith’s reputation, but it does look like he has helped to regain his chances in the NFL draft.

On March 3, 2009, ESPN had the opportunity to have a chat with Knowshon Moreno.  They allowed fans to ask questions and Knowshon did a great job of being honest and answering them.

My favorite question asked to Moreno helped to show his good character.  It was from Steiny from NYC and the question was “What was the best advice that Mark Richt has ever given you?”  And Knowshon’s answer was, “Just how to be a person off the field–how to be a Christian man and respect everyone. He’s been in my corner with this whole process.”
